The Misadventures of the Magician's Dog Blog Book Tour

A few weeks ago I signed up to join a blog book tour. Needless to say I was elated to find my copy in the mail a few weeks ago. The Misadventures of the Magician's Dog is the debut novel for Frances Sackett.

At first I was a bit skeptical. Hmmm, talking dogs, magicians, dinosaurs and a mouse who's been transformed into a human! BUT, as I read this one I changed my mind. I found this one quite enjoyable. I'm always on the lookout for books which will appeal to my students. This one will be enjoyed by the third - fifth graders at my school.

My quick summary/review: Peter, our young hero, finds himself asking for a dog as a birthday present. Only problem, he hates dogs. When Peter and his family arrive at the animal shelter, he is drawn to one very unusual one. After taking the dog home, Peter discovers "The Dog" can talk! After relating the tell of his former master, "The Dog" convinces Peter to try to save him from a misguided spell. With the help of his sisters, Peter agrees to help Dog in return for bringing their father home from a combat mission in the Middle East. Of course Dog has to convince Peter of his own magical powers, which just happen to fascinate his two sisters.

I'll give this one 4 stars! It will make a great introduction to fantasy for my young readers not quite ready for John Flanagan or  J.K. Rowling. Great little read showing love's more powerful than evil.
